HOSTAGE
by
Allan Porter
The scenario behind Allan Porter's
text adventure will be disturbingly
familiar to most of us: a gang of
five urban terrorists has invaded a
bank president's home and has taken
the banker hostage. Unless the
terrorists receive ransom and are
granted asylum within the hour, they
will execute their hostage.
The character that you play in the
adventure is a cop who also happens
to be a longtime friend of the captive
banker. The Chief of Police has given
you one hour to infiltrate the house,
take out the terrorists, and free your
friend. And if five-to-one odds are
not enough, one of the rooms of the
house is booby-trapped.
A TEXT ADVENTURE PRIMER....
Like all text adventures, Hostage
works by giving you a printed
description of of your surroundings.
To interact with the surroundings,
you must type in commands. To go
east, for example, you would type in
"E". The commands used in Hostage
are displayed when you first begin
your adventure. If you are
unfamiliar with the game, it would be
a good idea to write them down for
later reference. The amount of time
and the number of "hit points" you
have left are displayed at all times
while you are playing.
"Hit points" represent the number
of times your character may be
wounded before he is killed. The
toughness of your character is
determined by chance at the beginning
of the game. You also choose the
level of difficulty (1-3) at the
beginning of the game. (The more
difficult the game, the longer it
takes you to move from room to room
in your search for the banker).
One hint for Hostage -- you must
kill all five terrorists before you
are credited with a "win" even if you
successfully rescue the bank
president.
And one more hint-- as with most
text adventure games, making a map of
the surroundings will make things go
much smoother-- a map will save you
valuable time when you have to
backtrack in your search of the house.
Even with a map, though, your
mission will never be a piece of
cake: the location of the terrorists,
the hostage-- and the booby-trapped
room-- change with each game. But
what would-be hero would have it any
other way?
